Last week Wednesday (22.04) I joined a local ringer to check some nestboxes of Ural Owls near Joensuu. I didn't have high expectations since it is not a good owl year, and well yeah, the idea of handling such an owl species seemed surreal to me :) In total we checked five Ural Owl nestboxes, of which three were occupied. We caught the three females on the nest, and as it turned out, all of them were already ringed! The oldest one was a female of at least 6 years old already. Very good to know that the birds are so loyal to their breeding places, means that the conditions should be quite good there! The nests contained 1x 2 eggs and 2x 3 eggs.

The photos below don't need any explanation..:)
Woodpeckers are more conspicuous and the past week I've had some nice encounters with Black Woodpeckers. When I was doing a small tour on my bicycle north of Joensuu in the search for some Three-toed Woodpeckers, I came across some very cooperative Black Woodpeckers. Next to that, I had a close encounter with a Black Woodpecker at Pentillä, the industrial area in Joensuu. Moreover, Treecreepers have started singing everywhere, during the sunny days I had quite a few in some forested areas in Joensuu. I managed to get some nice recordings and photos.
And how!

The predictions had been high all day, Kp levels reaching 8-9, indicating a major geomagnetic storm, and in the end it turned out to be the strongest geomagnetic storm in 10 years!

Around 19.30 as it got dark we went outside to see if there would be already some activity. We spotted a weak grey moving line in the sky but weren't sure if it was aurora, since we had not seen it before. But then suddenly around 19.40 the whole sky turned green and aurora was dancing everywhere. There were green, purple and red colours. Amazing! The peak lasted for some 10 minutes and after that the aurora weakened a little bit but stayed very active. The whole night we could witness greyish-green curtains of aurora waving through the sky. Every now and then it turned stronger.

Next to that it was my birthday the 18th, so my birthday celebration was really special, and one I will never forget!

Too bad my photos aren't perfect but they still give a nice idea how it was. I also include some photos from my dear friend Jacopo Giacomoni who took much better photos :)

Enjoy!
Levi is located just north of Kittilä, in the north east of Lapland. Beforehand I had done some birding preparation with the help of tiira.fi but, most observations of my target species were not in the area where I would be staying.. and since I was not on a birding trip I would just wait and see what happens! And this turned out pretty well I must say!

For the long the 700km up north we left Joensuu at 1.30 am and arrived at our first destination: Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, too much commercial nonsense if you ask me. Taking a photo with Santa Claus for 25 euros, why not? :) However, this was our (and mine) first experience of crossing the arctic circle, and yeah, after crossing it I really felt like I was in a different world! After Rovaniemi, we visited Lainio Snow Village, ca. 30km west of Kittilä. That was a really nice visit, seeing nice sculptures and you could also spend a night in the snow village, sleeping on a matress above a pile of ice! Beforehand, I saw on tiira that the Azure Tit that has been present in Lapland was still there, and I was only 30km away from it... too bad it was in the other direction, so no chance for me..
A room in the snow village, how comfortable!

After visiting these places we arrived in Levi around 17.00. We had a nice cottage with 13 people and enjoyed our first meal in Lapland together. The next morning, the 3rd of March, we were up for a Husky safari. But first I had a small walk and saw my first new bird in Lapland: a Siberian Jay! It was at some feeders in front of a house, very nice and unexpected! After this, we went for the husky tour. This is one of the things you have to do when you are in Lapland. In pairs we could get on a sledge with five huskies in front and start the safari. Driving the sledge through this amazing Lappish landscape was amazing!
Wednesday (4th) and Thursday (5th) were mostly spend doing cross country skiing, which was really nice! On wednesday we did a track of 20 km, through some hills and flat areas close to Levi. During the track I added another new species to my list: Siberian Tit! A group of at least 7-8 crossed the skiing track. I noticed them first by their calls, clearly different than any other tits, reminding most of Willow Tit. I tried to make some recordings which I might add later. Also during the skiing I had a pair of Siberian Jays. Such curious birds as they come to check you out!
Beautiful landscape...

Friday morning we tried a new hiking track on the eastern side of the village. Some of my friends had seen 2 Willow Grouse there and photographed them very well... So I wanted to see if i could find them. Unfortunately they were no where to be found. We did see good numbers of Siberian Jays (at least 6-8 birds). Next to this I had a singing Pine Grosbeak, nice surprise. The best surprise of all came at the end of the hike.... I suddenly spotted a Hawk Owl perched in a dead tree! Amazing! It was being mobbed by Siberian Jays continuously. After this successfull hike we proceeded to the city where we spend the rest of the afternoon in the spa, very relaxing.
Despite this, you can still do some birdwatching; lots of people feed birds in their gardens! The variety of species is not very high, but every now and then some nice species can turn up. Tits (Great, Blue, Willow and Coal Tit) are usually found, followed by Yellowhammers, Tree Sparrows, Waxwings, Bullfinches,Fieldfare, the less usual Blackbirds and also regularly Redpolls. In a feeding place south of Joensuu there have been observations White-backed Woodpecker, Eurasian Nuthatch spp. asiatica and also good numbers of Hawfinches; a rare visitor in Karelia.

Last week sunday (Feb 1st) I went to the feeding place to see if I could take some photos and see some nice species; I felt like doing some birdwatching because it had been a while!

I spent some 1,5 hours there, enjoying myself with the Waxwings and other birds, but I hadn't seen my target species yet. Then after long waiting both White-backed Woodpecker and Nuthatch showed up simultaneously! I was able to take some good pics of both species, very exciting!

Below some of the results:
Faab is on an adventure again: Finland this time! A month has already passed since I've been here and I promised myself (and others) that I would start with my blog again, so there is no way of avoiding it anymore :) The past weeks I have been quite busy with all sorts of stuff, so I didn't find the time yet to write something.

On January 3rd I flew from Amsterdam to Helsinki where I met Roni and his girlfriend Annika. The first two days were spent in Helsinki, doing some sightseeing and birding (and eating my first Moose meat!). On monday the 5th, we set off to Joensuu, a city in Eastern Finland where I am spending this semester studying forestry! On the way we dipped a Hawk Owl, but connected with a nice group of Two-barred Crossbills. Also, we saw our first groups of Pine Grosbeaks, and I managed to ring my first Grosbeak! The 6th we mainly did Grosbeak ringing, catching 22. And on wednesday the 7th, the real life begun: the orientation days of the university started at 12.00. The next days were spent doing all kinds of practical stuff for the uni, and of course meeting a lot of new people! So far it's been a lot of fun, making new friends, doing real Finnish stuff (Saunaaa, ice swimming, ice fishing etc) and studying at another university is also challenging!

Birdingwise I haven't had a lot of time for it yet! Not that winter birding here is superb exciting, but still there are some nice things to see around. The Waxwings haven't bored me yet; I see hundreds everyday, while cycling to the uni!

Together with my dad and Henri. They've been present there for quite some time now, and we finally had the time to visit them.

We took the ferry at 10.40 from Harlingen and arrived on the island around 11.30. We rented a bike and then headed in the direction of the owls. There was a strong wind blowing so the 6 km drive took us about 45 minutes!

Arriving there we soon found a Snowy Owl perched on a dune, quite distant though, The view through the scope was great, but there was not much activity so we looked for the 2nd bird. I soon saw on waarneming.nl that the second bird had been seen. So we headed there. This bird was much closer - but still not really active. We spend the entire afternoon with the birds, very enjoyable!

Here are some shots:
I visited the Paleispark at Paleis het Loo this morning and had a great morning. Clear skies, with clouds every now and then, together with some slight wind gusts. The birds were in full swing: active Great Spotted Woodpeckers, most species of Tit, singing Chaffinches, Hawfinches, Mistle Thrush, displaying Goshawk and so on. Wonderful. The signs of winter were still conspicious however, with hundreds of Bramblings and Chaffinches. Also, groups of Fieldfares and Redwings were still present in the park.

My visit had a special goal: finding Middle-spotted Woodpeckers. It only took me about half an hour before I found them! I was walking along a lane with old oaks and suddenly I heard and saw two woodpeckers chasing each other. They turned out to be Middle-spotted!

The male showed well for a while, foraging in a oak at close distance. I lost the other bird as soon as I focused on the male, I presume it was a female because it was not really vocal, but I'm not sure. A bit later the male took off and started singing in a patch of oak trees a few 100m away from me. I enjoy the Jay-song of the woodpeckers, very distinctive.

Anyway, I got a couple of decent shots from the bird, if I would have my phone with me a good sound recording would have been collected as well,
Today I saw my 4th lifer of the year already... Two-barred Crossbill, Brown Shrike, Caspian Plover (last Saturday) and now White-billed Diver. Incredible!

Just take a look at this list of (really) rare birds present in NL right now:

Yesterday a White-billed Diver (or Yellow-billed Loon) had been found on the Rhederlaag, a recreational lake near Arnhem. It's a good place for seabirds. I've seen Velvet Scoter and Long tailed Duck there for example. And now this place strikes again, but this time with a real badass bird!

The bird was discovered late in the afternoon and we weren't able to twitch it, so we went this morning. Together with my dad and Tommy we arrived there at 9.40. Luckily for us (and lots of other people), the bird was still there and showed really well.

We first saw the bird at quite close range (~150m). Not much later the bird swam towards the sun, bad light, and the bird was swimming further and further away. We tried from the other side of the lake where we had good views, but more distant than before (~500-600m). The light was perfect, so that made up for the distance.

Tammo got a recordshot of the first moments:

White-billed Diver (Gavia adamsii), first winter; what an enormous, massive bill,

As Tommy and I had to go to the uni we took off. Hopefully the bird will stay longer so we can visit it again:)

By the way, here: http://waarneming.nl/soort/photos/812?from=2014-01-27&to=2014-01-27 are already lots of other good pics of the bird. Check it out whilst I'm still enjoying this lifer from behind my laptop!

I went together with Reinoud Vermoolen. We left Wageningen at 8.00 and in the mid-morning we arrived there. At arrival the bird wasn;t active at all, it was sat inactively on a crop field. We decided to check Neeltje Jans for Shags, but we weren't productive. When we came back to look if the Caspian Plover had become more active, and indeed! The bird had flown to another crop field and was foraging actively. At a good distance we could observe the bird very well. I managed one record shot:

Caspian Plover (Charadrius asiaticus), first winter; based on the light brown edging of the coverts

Next stop was the Snow Goose not far from the Caspian Plover. We soon found it together with Greylag Geese, for what's worth it...!

As always, the Brouwersdam between the islands Schouwen-Duivenland & Goeree-Overflakkee. This is always a great birding place in winter, for waterfowl.

We saw a Great Northern Diver, some Red-throated Divers, several Horned and Red-necked Grebes, some Common Scoters and 3 Long-tailed Ducks were also really nice. One male was sat on the side of the dam, nice!

Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis), adult? male

Last but not least a stop was made at the Maasvlakte, where the longstaying (120+ days!!) is still present. We had perfect views as it flew past in front of the car and perched on a pole, not far in the field!

We decided to head for the Parrot Crossbills near Nijmegen that have been present there for almost two months. A group of 25 birds is being really cooperative and we decided we wanted to see them, I mean why not!

When we arrived there the birds also just arrived and flew towards us, landing in some pine trees further down the path. It was immedatly and nice oppertunity to record them:
http://waarneming.nl/sound/view/24653

And here some sonograms:

Sonogram of Parrot Crossbills (Loxia pytyopsittacus), mixed with Common Crossbills (Loxia curvirostra)

The only thing was: there were too many people around for them to go down and drink water from a small pool, so we only had views of them in flight, and in the pine trees.

Still quite happy with this flight shot!

Then in the afternoon things got exciting!

We got an alert that a possible Brown Shrike had been found near Gendringen, in the utmost south-east of the province of Gelderland. It was already late (not much light), but we decided to give it a go! We arrived there at 16.10, with still quite a bit of light.

The bird was sitting in some small willows and thorn bushes, approximately 200-300m away from us. What bird!!! A first for NL, and that in winter time!

The group of twitchers that had arrived by 16.30. Aprroximately 100-150 saw this first for NL yesterday before it got dark.

Here are some record shots from Tammo:

Brown Shrike (Lanius cristatus), first winter; note the striking headpattern: upperside head light brown, black eye stripe, white supercilium and whitish cheek. Back is brownish, secondaries form a light panel, brownish and rounded tail. Barring on the underparts make it a 1st-winter.

There was also this Long-eared Owl catching mice at a few metres distance which drew a lot of attention:

The previous day two Two-barred Crossbills had been found in the forests near Maarn. The following day, whilst we were hiking on the Hoog Buurlosche Heide I saw an alert that the birds had been seen again. When got home around 12:00 my dad and I soon got into the car and drove up there.

We had to wait for an hour orso, but then suddenly an adult male Two-barred Crossbill landed in the top of larch together with some other crossbills, showing well for ca. 1 minute. We didn't get to enjoy our lifer for very long as the group took off again! Then a few moments later I discovered the second bird: an adult female, foraging on larch cones deeper in the bunch of larch trees. This bird also showed well for a short period of time and then took off as well! We didn't have the time to take photos but we were happy with wanted species!

Today, the 2nd of January we headed back to the Pygmy Owl again. The bird sat closer than the previous time and allowed is to take great photos! Other species observed today: a Great Grey Shrike, some Crossbills, Green Woodpecker and some other species that were new for the year 2014.

This last day of 2013, the 31st o f December was spent in Zwolle, where the Hawk Owl - that has been present since mid-November - was still showing exeptionally well!

I went together with my dad. It was the 3rd visit for me, but the first visit together with my dad. We spent a few hours with the bird, photographing it from every possible angle. It perched in a tree, a soccer goal, another tree, some poles, electricty buildings and so on - very confiding!

At one moment the bird took off from a tree, flying out of sight a few 100 metres to the north. Then a few minutes later, from the corner of my eye, I see the bird flying towards us, with a prey! It turns out to be a young male blackbird. This is the first time (as far as I know) that the bird has been seen with a bird as prey, instead of a mouse.

The bird didn't seem to mind all the fireworks in the city, there were even some people firing carbid in the fields next to the bird!

Below the photo series: enjoy! And best wishes & a Happy New Year!
Many groups of varying sizes were seen throughout the country. In my region the observations were spread rather thinly - there was a group present on NP de Hoge Veluwe but not anywhere else. I tried to see this group once and had birds, just taking off from a pine tree: not a really satisfying observation. Since you have to pay an entrance fee for the park I didn't visit them more often - I wanted to find them myself!

And thus, almost every weekend in November and December I did a lot of cycling through the forests, surrounding Apeldoorn. It wasn't succesfull until last week. My dad found some Parrot Crossbills early December, but we could not relocate this group.

Last Thursday, the second Christmas day, my dad and I did a search for Crossbills again. After a few hours searching we still hadn't seen any Crossbills. When we were close to Kootwijk there was one more place I wanted to check with my dad for Parrot Crossbills: to me this would be the perfect place for them!

Once we arrived there I noticed a Crossbill perched in a pine tree. One look through my binoculars and I knew enough: Parrots! Full of exitement we started taking photos. A bit later the bird flew off with a second one and started foraging in some pine trees further down the path. So there were two birds, a male and a female!

Finally after so many hours of searching I'd found my own!
Now time for another story:

Since a couple of weeks a Pygmy Owl has been present not far from my house. It had been really hard to find the last few weeks but since last weekend the bird has been observed continuously. Yesterday I visited the bird with my dad, and indeed: we had fantastic views of the bird! My second observation ever of Pygmy Owl and that only 20min from home!

It's a mixed group with both Lesser and Mealy Redpolls. Today I succeeded in catching one of each species. Both were classical examples of both species! Below of short photo study of the birds:
And a nice comparison of the two species!

Last time we did it was very succesfull with Steppe Grey Shrike and two Olive-backed Pipits, so our expectations were high :)

On Saturday the 19th of October a group of birders discovered a Daurian Shrike near Vinkeveen, in the western part of the Netherlands. The previous years we've had good twitchable individuals (mostly on the isles) but this is still the 12th record orso for the Netherlands. I'd never seen one before so this was our target species number one.

We arrived at Waverhoek around 7.20 and it would still take half an hour to be able to scan de area for the shrike. During the sunrise we walked to the location, observing hundreds of geese and ducks departing from the lakes nearby. Also many Snipes. Arriving at the location we were the only ones present. As the light got better we started scanning. One hour later we still didn't have the shrike, and a group of ca.30 twitchers had gathered. We decided to go to IJmuiden since we could always do the bird on our way back home. As we walked back the same way we came we didn't find the shrike and got in the car. We drove away when I suddenly see a small group of people actively staring through their scopes and photographing something... a quick look from the car reveals the shrike! It had been present along a path where most of the twitchers had walked past during the morning when heading for the ''old location''!We had walked another path (so no blaming us for not finding it earlier haha).

The bird showed wonderfully, shifting between perching in a reedbed, some small bushes and undergrowth. Initially there were some doubts about the ID of the bird (either Red-tailed or Daurian). In the end the conclusion was Daurian Shrike.

Observations on the shrike: small shrike, lightbrown plumage, crown seemed a bit darker, with a more greybrown tinge, faint barring on the underparts, no barring uppertailcoverts, eye-stripe brownish, reddish orange tail. Amongst others light tips on greater coverts and pattern of tertails make it a 1st-winter. In active tail-moult. 3 old feathers with 7 new ones growing.
Well I have! Last week when I was strolling along a shoreline of a large recreational lake a small group of waders, excisting out of 2 Ruff and 4 Dunlin landed in front of me and started foraging along the shore. I looked for tactical place and positioned myself there. Slowly they started foraging towards me as if I wasn't there. It was really great! Curious birds that didn't care of my presence. In harsh/cold conditions I can imagine that birds will be tame but not when the weather is just standard.

Below the result of my small fotoshoot with the birds:
''I think I just caught a Lanceolated Warbler''!!!! Whaaaat? Seriously? He was serious... As soon as I could I alerted my dad and 45 minutes later we arrived at the Ooijse Graaf near Nijmegen.

The 4th Dutch record, the second ''live'' sighting of this species; earlier records were 2002 (one ringed along the Dutch coast), 1958 (found dead), 1912 (found dead). So an extremely rare catch!
Our plan was to drive to Bialowieza in two days. After driving 700km through Germany, passing the German-Polish border at Frankfurt a/d Oder, we arrived at Pozradlo where we had picked our campsite, a dutch campsite called De Kroon. In Germany we had seen quite a few Red Kites along the highway and also a Black Kite. Along the highway near the Polish border we saw an Osprey nest from the driving car with a bird sitting on the nest. We'd them at exactly the same place three years earlier as well. In the morning of the 16th we woke up with the sound of Cranes, Corn Buntings, Golden Orioles and in the mean time the Fieldfares had replaced the Blackbirds.

We packed our stuff and continued our journey to Bialowieza. After a full day drive with some breaks in between we arrived at Bialowieza around 5 in the afternoon. We camped at the campsite next to the campsite U michala. We liked this campsite more because of the space and it was less busy.

In the evening we had a short trip with our bicycles. We drove to Pogorcelze, north of Bialowieza. On the way there we had several singing Rosefinches, a singing Savi's Warbler and a calling Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. In the city of Pogorcelze we had another Rosefinch and we had fine views of our first Wryneck of the trip.

17th of July

We decided to have a bit of a sleep-in this morning. Because of the light we already woke up at 4.30 but a relaxing day would do no harm. At the campsite, during breakfast, we had Middle-spotted Woodpecker, Icterine Warbler and a welcome surprise was a Wryneck in front of the tent.

Wryneck (Jynx torquilla)

After breakfast we cycled to Teremiski. On the way we had nice views of Rosefinches. In the clearings of Pogorcelze and Teremiski we had a couple of Lesser Spotted Eagles. At Teremiski a Great Grey Shrike was perched on a wire.
From the 15th to the 29th of July I went to Poland together with my dad. It was the 3rd time we visited Poland and we still don't have enough of it! The first week we stayed in Bialowieza where our main goal was to see European Bison and Wolves. We managed to see Bisons and hear Wolves and also managed to see most bird species there. The second week we did more cultural things, visiting Zamosc, Krakow, Auschwitz and the Wieliczka Salt Mine. We had a great time!

A trip report will follow in the upcoming blogposts.
Doesn't mean I didn't experience anything worth mentioning on my blog.. on the contrary..! I've been quite busy with my study lately. I had a field course including two weeks of practical assignments on the Veluwe, had lots of excursions and was busy for over a month with a course called Biodiversity of the Netherlands. In between all the studying I also did my regular ringing sessions on the Veluwe. Below you'll find a series of pics from the past weeks :)
In the Deelerwoud between Apeldoorn and Arnhem. I was still in Wageningen, but I saw it was still present today and my dad had also seen it. I decided to go back home to Wageningen and twitch it from there. I was accompanied by my dad. When arrived at the parking lot we had a singing Turtle Dove. Then we proceeded to the Bee-eater and it was still in its spot, catching bumblebees. First time I see this species in Holland (I must say I hadn't done any effort so far).

Other species observed: multiple Black Woodpeckers, a Honey Buzzard and my first Spotted Flycatchers of the year.
Lots of good 'inland' birds have been observed along the IJssel.

There's a new wetland area near Welsum that has produced some good birds so far. Tuesday Piet Schermerhorn observed a Black-winged Stilt and a Red-throated Pipit there. Good birds! Furthermore some waders have showed up there: a Sanderling, a Red Knot, a Curlew Sandpiper, up to 20-30 Wood Sandpipers, several Ringed Plovers, Whimbrels and so forth! Next to that groups of thunberghi Yellow Wagtails have been present there.

We had to see these good inland waders so my dad and I visited the area yesterday. We had the Sanderling, the Red Knot and the Curlew Sandpiper. Also some 10 thunberghi Yellow Wagtails, 3 Whimbrels, 15 Wood Sandpipers, 2 Ringed Plovers, 6 Garganeys etc!
When we drove back we had our first Hobby of the year, perched on a pole in the field, eating its prey; a White Wagtail!
